Union Cab Artists Open Show
Fifteen cab drivers will show their work at a special Art Opening to be held August 1, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at the Yahara Bay Gallery (3118 Kingsley Way, Madison).
The gallery will open the show with a reception, hors d'oeuvres by cabbies, and a dance party hosted by a Union Cab of Madison Co-operative and DJ'd by a Union Cab Driver.
Madison has often been described as the city with the most educated cab drivers, and while intellect drives many conversations in the cab, it may surprise passengers to learn of the paintings, sculptures, glass blown art, drawings, and photography created by their cab driver. Four years ago, the musicians of Union Cab produced a compilation CD entitled "Rearview Visionaries" and in 2007 three drivers published novels and won the Wisconsin Association of Taxi Owners' Cab Driver of the Year Award in 2008.
"Arts are becoming increasingly professionalized, " commented Union Cab driver Fred Schepartz, " so much so that it is hard for the average person to consider someone without an MFA to be an artist."
Union Cab's mission is to create jobs at a living wage in a safe, humane and democratic environment. It will be celebrating its 30th anniversary of creating sustainable good jobs this fall.
Some of the artists presenting include, but are not limited to: Angela Braun, Jeremy Parker, Andy Konrath, Nino Rodriguez, Diane Sing, Ron Esser, Ingrid Frances Stark, Fred Schepartz, and Dave Jacobitz.
Union Cab's musicians are currently working on a second compilation CD and its chefs are working on a Union Cab cookbook, but August 1st will belong to the artists.
