Union Cab Serves the Entire Community On May 21, 2004 Union Cab began offering on demand service for people who use wheelchairs but are unable to transfer from their chair to a car seat. Earlier in the year, Union Cab voluntarily proposed to provide the service in order to prevent a change to the Madison General Ordinance which would have forced all three taxi companies to provide the same service. We chose to volunteer because we recognized that the community of people with disabilities needs and wants this service, that it would be a devastating hardship on other providers who fill an important niche, and that our vision is to serve the entire community in such way that we are considered a valuable resource and sustainable asset by all. As of July 1, 2004, we have accessible service available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We appreciate advance notice especially during early morning or late night hours. To order accessible service, simply call our dispatch office at 242-2000. Inform the customer service representative that you need an accessible vehicle. You will be informed of its availability and have your order placed into our computer assisted dispatch system. Vehicle Specifications We get our accessible taxis from a company (New Freedom) which customizes minivans to conform to ADA standards. This means that not everyone in the Madison area will be able to use their current wheel chair to access the vehicle. In order to assist you, we have provided the specifications of the vehicle below. Due to the already prohibitive cost of these vehicles (and the limitations of minivans), we will not be able to special order vehicles with broader dimensions.
